A non-parametric and scale-independent method for cluster analysis II: the multivariate case Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT A general method is described for detecting and analysing galaxy systems. The multivariate geometrical structure of the sample is studied by using an extension of the method which we introduced in a previous paper. The method is based on an estimate of the probability density underlying a data sample. The density is estimated by using an iterative and adaptive kernel estimator. The used kernels have spherical symmetry, however we describe a method in order to estimate the locally optimal shape of the kernels. We use the results of the geometrical structure analysis in order to study the effects that is has on the cluster parameter estimate. This suggests a possible way to distinguish between structure and substructure within a sample. The method is tested by using simulated numerical models and applied to two galaxy samples taken from the literature. The results obtained for the Coma cluster suggest a core-halo structure formed by a large number of geometrically independent systems. A different conclusion is suggested by the results for the Cancer cluster indicating the presence of at least two independent structures both containing substructure. The dynamical consequences of the results obtained from the geometrical analysis will be described in a later paper. Further applications of the method are suggested and are currently in progress.

We obtain a robust, non-parametric, estimate of the Hub-ble constant from galaxy linear diameters calibrated using HST Cepheid distances. Our method is independent of the parametric form of the diameter function and the spatial distribution of galaxies and is insensitive to Malmquist bias. We include information on the galaxy rotation velocities ; unlike Tully-Fisher, however, we retain a fully...

We update the analysis of the MSW and general astrophysical solutions to the combined solar neutrino observations by including the GALLEX II result. We also show that our parametrized flux uncertainties are equivalent to the Monte-Carlo results of Bahcall and Ulrich.

We obtain the BTZ black hole (AdS 3 ×S 3) as a non-dilatonic solution from type 0B string theory. Analyzing the perturbation around this black hole background, we show that the tachyon is not a propagating mode.

A multidimensional gravitational model containing several dilatonic scalar fields and antisymmetric forms is considered. The manifold is chosen in the form M = M 0 × M 1 ×. .. × M n , where M i are Einstein spaces (i ≥ 1). The block-diagonal metric is chosen and all fields and scale factors of the metric are functions on M 0. For the forms composite (electromagnetic) p-brane ansatz is adopted. ...

The top quark is by far the heaviest known fermion [1]. In consequence, experiment is just beginning to explore its properties, and some of them may yet prove to be distinctly non-standard. The very size of the top quark’s mass even hints at the possibility of a special role for top in electroweak symmetry breaking. This talk examines the top quark in the context of physics beyond the standard ...
